The Whitefield Center is the host to a number of life-changing activities in the Thomas Square Area.   Find out about these ongoing initiatives below!

Urban Hope After School Program

The Whitefield Center is happy to host a vibrant after school initiative conducted by Urban Hope. The top priority of the after school program is to give inner city and at risk children a safe, loving environment.

Basic Adult Literacy

This program is offered through Hope Academy with one to one instruction.  Committed illiterate individuals have been taught to read in as little as six weeks.

Grace Ashtin Christian School for Girls

The Center is home to the Grace Ashtin Christian School for Girls.

 

Alpha Phi Alpha: Savannah Alphas  

The Center welcomes the Beta Phi Lamba chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha (the “Savannah Alphas”) as they gather to plan out community service initiatives and local leadership development activities.

Elemental Reading Tutorials

Tutoring of elementary school children takes place at Savannah Classical Academy and Gadsden Elementary.  These schools both serve students in the Thomas Square area.  Savannah Classical is an AFTER-SCHOOL program while Gadsden is IN-SCHOOL.

Financial Literacy

What is a checkbook?  What’s a savings account?  What are stocks and bonds? What’s a budget?  These and many other basic and elementary financial issues are addressed on site in specific Thomas Square area middle and high schools.

Senior Advocacy 

Senior Advocacy takes place at Williams Court Apartments, a Thomas Square area senior housing center for the financially disadvantaged.   This initiative includes a weekly Bible study combined with medical transportation and prescription medication assistance.  

Plans are underway to expand this program to Sister’s Court, a similar senior facility in the Thomas Square neighborhood upon its reopening.

Summer Camp

After operating an inaugural, one-week “Cadillac” summer camp program in 2015, Whitefield partnered with Urban Hope to offer a 9 week program in 2016.  The day camp runs Monday thru Friday from 9 to 4 with a myriad of educational, artistic, horticultural and downright fun activities!

Savannah Sankofa

The Savannah Sankofa Youth Organization for Boys is a nonprofit group that mentors economically disadvantaged youth boys (ages 8-18) using sports and music as motivators..

Young Life of Savannah

Young Life goes to where kids are and builds personal relationships with them, providing fun, adventurous life changing and skill building experiences, inviting young people to personally respond to the Good News of the Gospel of Christ and walking in friendship with them regardless of their response.  Young Life serves several schools in the Savannah area, with special emphasis on Beach and Savannah High, schools that serve the Thomas Square neighborhood.

 

Bethesda Academy

Bethesda Academy which was originally founded as an orphanage by George Whitefield in 1740, partners with the Whitefield Center in providing an additional Summer Camp location for Urban Hope.  Plans are also underway to offer Bethesda Academy as an educational alternative to rising 6th grade Urban Hope boys.
